  • Readiness (Tier 9) cooldown lowered from 5 minutes to 3 minutes.
  • Hunting Party (Tier 10) - Updated stats/description: Your Arcane Shot, Explosive Shot and Steady Shot critical strikes have a 20/40/60/80/100 chance to restore 2 mana, 10 energy, 4 rage or 10 Runic Power to all members of your party. The cooldown of this talent has been removed.

WoWlympics ongoing at WoWwiki (World of Warcraft)

There's another Olypmics happening apart from the one in Beijing, and this one's much closer to home. WoW Insider is reporting that WoWwiki is holding their very own WoWlympics (wow, that's a lot of wows right there), a scavenger hunt-type contest.

Blizzard will be in cooperation for the event, and so you can win five Wrath of the Lich King US Beta keys, 20 WorldWide Invitational cards containing codes for EU Beta keys and the Tyrael vanity pet. Both beta keys can be converted for use between regions as necessary.

The WoWlympicks kicked off with Clopper Wizbang asking players to search the site for five missing items. Each are located on a WoWwiki page and clues are provided along the way. Now, each of these missing items you have to locate is worth one entry to the WoWlympics sweepstakes, with a bonus three entries if you find all five. This adds up to a total of eight entries eligible for the grand draw.

The event runs until August 25. To join, just follow the source link provided below. That should lead you to the official WoWlypmics page. Good luck!

BlizzCon opt-in lottery ticket system goes live (World of Warcraft)

account before August 12 (despite Blizzard's website being plagued by massive downtimes), then you're in for more luck! It's just been announced that the opt-in lotteries are now open.

The lottery period starts today, Wednesday, August 20, and will be ending on August 24, 11:59 P.M., PDT. All you have to do is log on to the Blizzard Account Management page any time within the lottery period. By the end of which, 1500 accounts will be picked out from the bunch and be awarded with a chance to get two tickets to the BlizzCon event.

Be advised that simply logging on will already give you a chance to be one of those lucky 1500 winners to be picked out. And since you're already logged on at that time, it might be best to double check your contact information too and update it if necessary.

Motorcycle riding in Wrath of the Lich King confirmed with The Hog mount

The Hog shown in Wrath of the Lich King - Image 1

Blizzard's unlocked a new mount for people to try out in the Wrath of the Lich King beta, and it's an awesome-looking motorcycle called "The Hog."

According to the current information that's been made available for the new mount, it's a level 80 mount that can only be used in Outland or Northrend. Furthermore, the mount isn't restricted to engineer professions, which means that, as of this writing, anyone who's level 80 can pick up this sweet ride to make their way across Outland and Azeroth.

The only sad thing about it? There isn't a lower-leveled equivalent so that you can drive around Outland in style. Ah well, it's a small regret at least.

Horde Leveling guide (Leveling Guide)

1-10
Just do your starting town newb quests and the surrounding area.

10-20 - The Barrens

Head on over to Orgrimmar and grab the Wind Rider master. Then make the long run to Crossroads in The Barrens, where many quests await you. Bind at this inn, and always use your Hearthstone to save you running time. The main quests to do here are the series of kill quests from Sergra Darkthorn (12-16), the series of razormane killing quests from Thork (12-15), the oasis-related quests from Tonga Runetotem (16), and the raptor quests from Gazrog (13 and 1Cool. Also available is Fungal Spores from Apothecary Helbrim (15) which will have you running to Thunder Bluff, where you'll want to train in your staff skill with the weapon master there, and also pick up the wind rider point. Just west of the Crossroads along the road is a small Orc outpost where you can find a series of Centaur quests from Regthar Deathgate (14-20). Heading east of the crossroads, along the road again, will bring you to Ratchet where you can find yet more quests such as a series from Mebok Mizzyrix (16-20), Wharfmaster Dizzywig (14-16), and Sputtervalve (14-16). One of Sputtervalve's quests will have you trekking over to Stonetalon Mountains (see below) but the end result (which you'll need a friend for as it's a level 27 quest) is a very nice cloak. Also, the quest NPC for the Chen's Empty Keg series of quests, Brewmaster Drohn (15-24) can be found in Ratchet. Now, if you look up the locations of all of these quests, you'll see that a lot of them coincide with each other in terms of location. Use this fact to minimize on the amount of running that you do. Time=Experience, remember? The Barrens is a big place and you can waste a lot of time there if you don't plan your journeys well. Plan your journeys for you? This isn't spoon feeding, it's just a guide! Well, ok, I'll give you a hint. Check out this link for the quest logs for these quests so you can work out your path. If at any point you manage to outlevel your quests, just find some mobs near your level - there's plenty in the Barrens - and grind on them until you hit the requisite level.

20-25 - More Barrens

At this point, it's time to incorporate Camp Taurajo in Southern Barrens to your leveling for some new, harder quests. However, there are still some very good quests from Crossroads and Ratchet that are worth doing. Lost In Battle and Consumed By Hatred which are given by Mankrik (20) are both good, as is the second part of Chen's Empty Keg as well as Egg Hunt which is given by Korran (22). Once you hit Taurajo, you should find the Blood Shards/Tribes At War series from Mangletooth (21-25) quite good, as well as the Gann's Reclamation series of quests from Gann Stonespire (23-26) who wanders on the road south of Camp Taurajo. The last part gives you a nice ring, but you'll need a friend or two to complete it. Now, these quests are hardly enough to level you from 20-25. I suggest you spend the time before, in between, and after these quests in Wailing Caverns, which is the level 20-25ish instance for Horde. You should do this because the XP there is very good, you'll learn some basic grouping skills, and you'll get some items, most of all is the Crescent Staff which you'll use until you're somewhere near 40. To add to the good XP, and to get the aforementioned staff, you'll need to pick up the Wailing Caverns quests in Thunder Bluff - Deviate Eradication from Ebru (21), Serpentbloom from Apothecary Zamah (1Cool (the plants for this quest inside the caverns can be seen using Find Herbs from the Herbalism profession), Leaders Of The Fang from Narah Wildmane (22). Also available is Smart Drinks from Mebok Mizzyrix (1Cool in Ratchet, who should be your old friend by now.

18-25 - Stonetalon

This is in a separate section because you're going to zone hop into here a little from around 18-25 to Stonetalon Mountains, which is a short way west of the Crossroads along the road. At the entrance to the zone you'll find some quests from Makaba Flathoof (1Cool and Seereth Stonebreak (18-23). Also in Stonetalon are quest mobs and bits for various quests that begin in the Barrens, such as Deepmoss Spider Eggs from Mebok Mizzyrix (20). At some point, you'll want to head up to Sun Rock Retreat and grab the wind rider master. There are various quests here such as the Cycle Of Rebirth quests from Tammra Windfield (23) and Elemental War quests from Tsunaman (25), a talking water elemental who lives on a ridge just behind the retreat. There is also a small series of quests in the Charred Vale (it can be a pain to get here: take the hill over the back of Sun Rock, and when you hit a fork in the hill, left leads to Tsunaman and right leads to the vale) starting with Harpies Threaten from Maggran Earthbinder (26), although Charred Vale is such an add-filled place it's best to get a couple of friends and do the Elemental War quests at the same time as these, doing them a couple of levels below their requirement at the same time, so you don't have to come back here later.

25-30 - Hillsbrad

Tons of kill quests, and a wide range of levels to fight. Also good for mining silk and greater healing potion reagents. Stay away from Alterac quests.
Let s take a quick timeout. At this point (level 25ish) you've got some decent gear from your quests and instancing, and you've got enough talents to make you a decent soloer. You're hopefully finding out that Shadow Word: Pain + Mind Flay + Psychic Scream is awesome, and regeneration after a fight with Spirit Tap is awesome. Your Mind Flay is about to get better with Shadow Reach. It's time to blow off the Barrens and surrounding areas, and go check out Hillsbrad Foothills. Run to Orgrimmar, and if you're Undead, speak to the Priest trainer, Ur'kyo. He gives you a quest for a spell called Devouring Plague, which you'll come to know and love. Now go get the zeppelin from the south side of the station outside of Orgrimmar.
First of all, when you step off the zeppelin in Tirisfal, head into Undercity, grabbing the wind rider point if you don't have it already, and speak to Aelthalyste the Priest trainer. She'll complete your Devouring Plague quest and give you the spell. Next you've got a fairly long run all the way to Tarren Mill in Hillsbrad. You'll pass through Silverpine Forest and should stop off at The Sepulcher. You'll have outlevelled the quests there by now, so ignore them, but pick up the wind rider point anyway before you continue on your journey. When you reach Tarren Mill, grab the wind rider, and bind there; you'll be around here for a while.
The first quests to do are Elixir Of Suffering and Elixir Of Pain from Apothecary Lydon (22-24), The Rescue from Krusk (22) and WANTED: Syndicate Personnel from the wanted poster (22) on the church front before you outlevel them too much. They take quite a lot of kills to get the ingredients so you'll earn some good experience. Then grab the Battle Of Hillsbrad series first quest from High Executor Darthalia (25-30) and while you're doing that, you can complete Souvenirs Of Death from Deathguard Samsa (25). The last Battle Of Hillsbrad quest, in Dun Garok, can be a real pain, but a full group and some common sense make it very simple. You'll see what I mean when you get there. Also whilst doing the Battle Of Hillsbrad quests you can complete Dangerous!, again from High Executor Darthalia (2Cool. More quests to do around Tarren Mill are the Elixir Of Agony series from our pal Apothecary Lydon (28-30), and Humbert's Sword from Deathguard Humbert (30) (which both require going into the Dun Garok where the final part of The Battle Of Hillsbrad is completed, so try to get them done together. Incidentally, Humbert's sword is a random drop from any mob in there).
For the time you aren't questing in this level range, I recommend grinding killing the same people that you kill for The Battle Of Hillsbrad quests. They're in plentiful supply; they drop decent cash, decent vendor-able items, and silk cloth.

30-32 - Thousand Needles

Now we're rollin'. You're Level 30, which means you have Vampiric Embrace, the first key part in your arsenal of becoming ridiculously powerful. If you're playing on a PvP server, you're either loving or hating the constant war that rages around Tarren Mill and the alliance city of Southshore by now! But fear not, because we're going to take a short break from this area and hop on back over to Kalimdor and on down to Thousand Needles!
Once you get back off the zeppelin near Orgrimmar, fly to the Crossroads and run all the way south to The Great Lift (which you probably discovered in your 20's when you were ignoring my guide and exploring, tut tut!) and get the Message To Freewind Post quest from Brave Moonhorn (25). Head between the pillars of stone and on up to Freewind Post, (bind there) where you will be able to grab the wind rider point, turn in your message to obtain the Pacify The Centaur quest series from Cliffwatcher Longhorn (25-2Cool, who also gives Grimtotem Spying. Whilst completing Grimtotem Spying you may happen upon an escort side quest, so it's a good idea to take a couple of friends up to do that one, as you won't complete the escort quest alone. Also available is the Alien Egg series from Hagar Lightninghoof (26-29). One part of this quest involves you swimming underwater gathering weeds and killing water elementals that get in your way; these are great for stocking up on water to drink, and also good experience. It's great being undead with a huge breath bar. I'd grind there for a while. Make sure you check out Hypercapacitor Gizmo (with a friend) from Wizlo Bearingshearer (30), who can be found just north of Freewind Post near a wrecked caravan. You get a decent little ring and a great xp reward for killing a mob that is about 10 seconds north of him.

27-37 Salt Flats

Two words: Salt Flats. Located in the eastern part of Thousand Needles, at level 30 about 8 quests open up that will net you 1 level in about 3 hours of killing mobs. Plus, you will make about 5g selling the useless drops you get. Easiest level in the game After you finish needles/flats you should be about level 33-34, and Arathi Highlands is where you want to be. It has a small alliance presence, but horde numbers are much greater. Lots of good quests here, including a bunch of elites with awesome rewards (one of the best swords you can get for levels 34).

28-33 - Arathi Highlands.

Few kill quests, but mostly good grinding stuff.

32-34 - Shimmering Flats

Moving on south of Thousand Needles brings you to its sub-zone, Shimmering Flats. The quests here are located in three separate Goblin encampments which are roughly North, Southwest, and Southeast of the centre of the flats. Incidentally, this whole zone is a big goblin racetrack. It's very cool. There are an abundance of quests requiring lots of travel time. Ignore them unless you need a break from fighting. The real gems here are the pickup-items-from-the-ground style quests and the kill quests, all of which don't send you any farther than the flats themselves. Check out all of the quests on offer from the NPCs there, and you'll soon find them all. You have all of Load Lightening from Pozzik (30), Hardened Shells from Wizzle Brassbolts (30), Salt Flat Venom from his brother Fizzle Brassbolts (30), Rocket Car Parts from Kravel Koalbeard (31), and A Bump In The Road from Trackmaster Zherin (33) to do. Also make sure you also pick up Hemet Nesingwary from Kravel Koalbeard (31), as you'll be seeing a lot of Hemet soon.

33-36 - Desolace.

So many centaurs… Watch out for useless quests. Best spot to farm grave moss (kodo graveyard). Stay away from the naga quests.

34-37 - Hillsbrad

Say it with me: I love Hillsbrad! I hope you meant it, because we're going back there now. This is the first stage of leveling where grinding - that is, killing mobs instead of questing - becomes the most efficient form of XP. Grab the quests Prison Break-in from Magus Wordeen Voidglare (35), Bracers Of Binding from Keeper Bel'Varil (34), and Infiltration from Krusk (34). Head up into Alterac Mountains from Tarren Mill, complete Infiltration, get it's follow up quest, then go up into the mountains again and head west. You'll find lots of low-mid 30's Yetis. Kill these until you're level 35 and some more. They're great XP, and will give you the first taste of just how effective a soloer you can be. Using the sequence of Mind Blast/Shadow Word: Pain/Mind Flay/Psychic Scream/Mind Flay/Mind Flay you should kill many of these mobs. Let your spirit tap regen work for 15 seconds between each kill. If your feared mob pulls another one, deal with that too, and then take a drink. The only time you should need to drink is if you get an add, when you rebuff yourself, or after about 20 minutes of near-constant killing. When you're bored of grinding, head west off the mountain and complete the two quests near Dalaran. Go hand them in at Tarren Mill, then get the second quest from Wordeen, and do that too, as well as the follow up quest to Infiltration from Krusk, the name of which escapes me, but has you eventually go and do the quest Lord Aliden Perinolde on the east side of Lordamere Lake. He's easy enough to kill at a slightly lower level (36ish) even though he's level 40 (he might have been 42, I forget), but he does heal himself irregularly and has infinite mana, so bring a friend or two with decent damage capabilities. You probably won't be 37 yet, so go and grind to 37 on Crushridge Ogres, which you will have encountered earlier on the way to the yetis and whilst completing Krusk's quests. WoW ogres have little hp and hit quite hard; perfect fodder for a caster who keeps his target feared most of the time.

36-40 - Swamp of Sorrows

Great grinding/money spot, towards the end there are some decent kill quests along the far east coast. For the harder murlocks hit up the cave in the SE section. These levels will fly by

37-45 - The Badlands

Now it's on to the Badlands, where you get to deal with 8billion coyotes running all over, and earth elementals on every single border Nah; it is a pretty good zone, with some good quests. Miners will love it because there is a ton of ore to be had here, mostly iron, some silver/gold/mithril. You can also head to Tanaris at some point, where there are another good supply of quests. Ooops, almost forgot Grom'Gol in stranglethorn vale. A huge amount of quests here, including 1 for a 14 slot bag at level 36. Make sure you don't skip this area, lots of great stuff here. Almost forgot Faralas as well. Not a lot of quests here, but it is an absolutely gorgeous zone. There is 1 long questline that ends with an amazing weapon, no matter what your class (4 to choose from).

43-48 Tanaris

Not many quests except for Zul Farrak (one of the elite instances w/5-6 quests, very worth running through), but tons of stuff to grind from. Rocs give the most loot to sell, ogres drop mageweave by the assloads, and the dogs go down easy as hell. Watch out for the useless 'go find this' quests.

48-50 - Searing Gorge

If you are a frost mage, this will be heaven to you. Stay on the northern side of the zone to fight tons of quickly respawning golems. Also, lots of fire elementals for some of those hard to get fire items needed in crafting. No wind rider.

50-51 - Un-Goro crater

This place blew. Do the kill quests, use Thott to find exactly where everything you need to kill spawns, and then leave. The quests give nice xp, but there's a much better place to grind off of which I'll mention next… You can get there from Tanaris. No wind rider.

52-54 - Western Plaguelands

For some reason, monsters here are incredibly easy… and drop runecloth happy . I'm having fun grinding here now, will let you know when something new comes up. I don't think there's a wind rider, but it's really close to UC

54-?? - Burning Steppes

I've found a few mobs that go down easier than the easy ghouls at WP that were 5 levels lower. They are usually to the north. I'll let you guys explore yourself to find them. Again, this is an ideal place for a frost mage, as well as the staging ground for one of the all around best instances in the game for everyone: BRD. Because you'll be reaching about the end of your grinding here, go ahead and take some runs through the instance. The gear is well worth it.

Dyack: EVE Online 'unparalleled' compared to World of Warcraft (Leveling Guide)

, humans and night elves? In the eyes of Silicon Knights founder Denis Dyack it does. During an interview conducted by videogaming247, Dyack weighed both Blizzard's World of Warcraft and CCP Games' EVE Online on what he considered the superior MMO game.

Dyack admitted to trying out WoW for nearly a month when he told himself, "You know, I've got to stop this". He then came the conclusion that compared to EVE Online, the latter had more depth in terms of content and gameplay. Here's a quote from Dyack regarding his opinion on the Sci-Fi MMO game:

I was really, really big into EVE Online. I love EVE Online, and actually for me personally I actually think it s a better game. I know it s a lot harder core, but the depth of it s unparalleled and I love it. But I have to stop, force myself to stop playing those games because it takes so much time.

He was also relieved about finally finishing the development for Too Human. He said that this meant he now has time to play games of all sorts. Anyway, that apparently is his two cents regarding what he considers the better MMO title.

Midgame Guide Paladin Leveling (World of Warcraft)

This is a guide for leveling your paladin

The class
The paladin is the ultimate support class; they can buff, dispel and heal and are extremely mana-efficient. On top of this they have seals and judgments, that adds more utility to them. They also have their infamous bubbles, which can save your bacon or make you able to do that quest in a hot landing zone. In short, paladins are hard to kill and good to have on your team. Downside is their lack of (burst)-DPS.

Leveling methods
Paladins have a DPS problem compared to other classes. They have the lowest DPS in the game, so questing is the best way to go about leveling your paladin. You can grind, just not for XP (since doing quest yield so much more XP). Grinding can be done, but even then you are better off duoing with some DPS.

Whichever you choose, I highly suggest doing nothing but instances from 58-60 to gear up and get all your key quests done. Not doing so, means missing out on a huge amount of XP.

The traditional ways are:

Grinding:
Not much to say about this. You kill mobs, they give XP, you lvl. If you don't have a comprehensive knowledge of where quests take you and which order is best, grinding is pretty fast for leveling.
It can be pretty boring, but listening to music or being on Vent/TS helps a lot. Get a rhytm going and stay in it. Take breaks when you mana up to not go completely blind :)

The following is pretty good list of where to grind which mobs. It is however from a Horde perspective and you need to scroll down a bit to get to the guide :) If you read the whole bit, there are some suggestions for alternatives, which work just as well…if not better.
http://www.mpsgames.com/ms/index.cfm?page=topic&topicID=31653&categoryid=20&forumid=63

And the following lists some nice alliance spots for grinding. Also are some suggestions on questing.
http://www.wow-pro.com/Knowledge_Base/op=show/kid=515.html

Questing:
If you know your way around the world, this is the fastest way to level up. This is also known as gresting to some. Decent horde guides are few and far between (there are some on this site), alliance have it a lot better.

Horde - if you are horde, use Joana's guide. That will take you from 1-60 in 5 days /played. It's written from a hunter perspective, so my suggestion is staggering your progress in the guide by a lvl or two. Other than that, there are some (admittedly with holes in them) guides here in the strat section. An idea is to try and modify the following Alliance guide.
http://forums.blizzhackers.com/viewtopic.php?t=309717 is the text guide (thanks Bay_Cassius
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=wow+world+of+warcraft+levels are links to all the videos (thanks sQren)

Alliance - if you are Alliance, you got it made! The following guide will quickly and easily take you from 30-60. Reason it's 30, is because of the quests pre that are in and around the starter areas, so just level quickly to 30 and you are set.
http://www.wow-pro.com/Knowledge_Base/cat=135.html

Talent specs
First of all, you need to figure out how you are gonna level up? Do you prefer to solo all the way, solo 90% of the time or solo 10% of the time and do instances 90% of the time? If you plan on going solo most of the time, there is no need to go heavy in holy and the other way around if you plan on doing instances.

The following spec is a 90% solo spec. It focuses on improving your melee damage with 2Hers (for SOC), while also allowing you to heal yourself reliably in a tight spot. With concentration aura on, you have uninterruptable heals and your Aura of devotion gives 20% more armour, since you won't be using shields. If you prefer shields, go with redoubt and shield specialization instead of imp. devo aura.

The following build is if you plan on doing instances, where you will probably be expected to heal. It's very holy heavy (35 pts), but with 16 points in Ret, you can still swing some hurt. This is the build I am using on my paladin atm.

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=sExh0gstZV0xt

This is also the build that works well until you start raiding seriously, at which point you should switch to the last spec.
This last spec is focused on support and not on DPS….at all. Surprisingly, it's less holy-heavy, but that is because of losing divine strength. It uses protection mostly for BOK and guardian's favour.

Gear
Again, your gear choices depend on your chosen leveling style…or your wallet. I carry two sets of gear on my pally; one for soloing/DPS'ing and one for healing. For solo/DPS play you should go for STR or AP, since you will do controlled pulls (and have bubbles) or you won't be hit much (in a group). For heal-bot duty, go for INT and don't be afraid to throw in leather, chain and cloth (you'll still have higher armour than a priest).

Mana-efficiency…and gear
Paladins have the most mana-efficient heal in the game and it's on a 1.5 sec cast too boot. Flash of light (FOL) makes you able to continually throw out small heals, so do this when you heal. Because you are casting all the tim, and you don't have any talents to allow you to benefit from SPI, you need to go about your gear a bit different from a priest.

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.aspx?fn=wow-paladin&t=932370&p=1&tmp=1#post932370 has a brilliant discussion on gear, which I will summarize below.

The starting raiding healadin, should go for INT to boost his mana-pool to the max. Once you start raiding and get access to better gear (lvl 60 blues and up), you should start to consider mana per 5 secs (MP5) and +heal. With enough MP5, you can virtually cast forever and with +heal you can cast even longer. Once you get enough +heal you can start to drop down in ranks of FOL and when you get short on mana, switch to lower ranks of longer casting heals, since they take more advantage of +heal and allows MP5 more time to work.

Conclusion
Paladin is a fun class to play, if you don't mind supporting. If you want to be a tankadin, or a casting DPS-adin or a ret-noob, prepare to be met with some sceptical glances and don't be too bent on doing it your way, since people have a tendency to type-cast…..besides, you have the most mana-efficient heal in the game, so use it! :)

I know paladins are a popular class, so there will probably be differing opinions on my layout of the class. This is my take on the class, but feel free to chime in below and I'll add the good stuff up top.

Macros, Scripts, Addons Etc. Explained (WoW Leveling)

This is a post that tries to explain the basic ideas behind and differences between terms like Macros, Scripts and AddOns to those who are either beginners to using such things or to making such things. All credits go to Legorol from the Hellscream server who posted this on the official Interface Customization bord.

Slash Commands
————————
To understand how everything else works, first it's useful to know what a Slash Command is. WoW allows you to give simple commands to the game in the form of a slash (/) followed by the name of the command. You can give these commands directly by typing them into the chat box. An example would be the "/follow" command. If you target a friendly character and type "/follow" (without the quotes), you start following them. You can get a list of some of the slash commands by typing "/help".

Here is the official sticky the EU forum which gives the complete list of all slash commands:
http://forums-en.wow-europe.com/thread.aspx?fn=wow-interface-en&t=7&p=1&tmp=1#post7

There are several types of slash commands, a lot of which you may already be familiar with (such as /1, /p, /g). Some are designed to perform game actions (e.g. /follow, /assist, /cast), others are chat related commands (e.g. /yell, /chatlist) or give you information (/who). You also have emotes (/laugh, /bow).

Finally, there is one very special slash command "/script", which I will explain later.

Macros
————–
The purpose of a Macro is to allow you to create some very simple custom actions or tasks, based on the existing game actions. A macro is just a sequence of slash commands, which are executed immediately and in order when you execute the macro. To create a new macro, either type "/macro" (without the quotes), or click on the speach bubble next to the chat box and select macro. You can then give a macro a name, an icon and type in a few lines of slash commands. The macro is created in the form of an action that you can drag onto your hotbar. You can activate the macro by clicking on the resulting button on the hotbar.

An example macro would be:
/cast Fireball(Rank 1)
/yell "I am frying it!"
This macro merely casts a fireball, and then yells for everyone to hear that you have done so.

Macros have some severe limitations, and are only intended for very very simple tasks.

FAQ:
Q: Can I cast two or more spells in a macro?
A: No. The most important limitation is that you can not cast more than one spell using a macro. This limitation is there so that macros can't automate too much for you. You can have as many other commands within the 256 character limit as you like.

Q: Can I wait between commands in a macro?
A: No. There is no command for waiting or pausing in a macro.

Q: Can I make a macro that casts different spells?
A: Yes. It is perfectly possible to make a macro that casts a different spell each time you run it, perhaps cycling through a list of spells. The limitation is one spell cast per keypress or mouse click (i.e. one spell cast each time the macro is run), but that one spell can be different each time.

Scripts
————–
Usually, not just in WoW, the term Script refers to a short to medium length program, written in some kind of simple programming language (called a scripting language). The purpose of a script is usually to control another program.

World of Warcraft has a powerful programming language called Lua embedded inside it, which is used for scripting. What this means is that WoW is able to understand and execute little programs written in the Lua language. However, in WoW, a script is usually not something that you use by itself, i.e. you don't just type in a script and execute it (although this is also possible). Instead, there are several places in WoW where you have the option to enter scripts as part of something else.

The kind of places that you can use a script in:
[li] /script [command] : If you type the slash command "/script" in the chat box, you can follow it with one or more valid Lua language statements (i.e. a script), separated by semi-colons (;).
[li] Macros: you can enter scripts as part of macros, by putting one or more "/script" command in your macro.
[li] User Interface modifications and AddOns: You can read more about these below, but the main point is that these are all created using Lua scripts (and also XML technology, but don't worry about that right now).

In all the cases you can use scripts in, the things you can do with the scripts are the same.

So what can a script do? There are many resources on Lua scripts. Some of the links that are useful:
http://www.lua.org for an explanation of the language
http://www.wowwiki.com for reference material
The most important point however is that scripts are able to perform many more game actions than slash commands. This is done via a set of functions (called API or Application Programming Interface) that WoW makes available for use in scripts. Here is a link to a quite extensive list of all the API functions available for use in scripts:
http://www.wowwiki.com/World_of_Warcraft_API

After all that explanation, here is an example of a script. [/pre] if (IsPartyLeader()) then
CastSpellByName("Fireball(Rank 1");
end[/pre] This script is very simple. When you execute this script, if you are the party leader, then you cast a fireball. To use this script, you could do so for example via the "/script" command. E.g. you could type this: [/pre] /script if (IsPartyLeader()) then CastSpellByName("Fireball(Rank 1"); end[/pre] directly into the chat box. Or you could make that line part of a macro, so that it's reusable.

In summary: a script in WoW is a short program written in the Lua language, able to interact with the game and perform game actions. You use a script by including it as part of something else, e.g. by putting it in a macro via the /script command, or by putting it in a UI Mod or AddOn.

User Interface Mods and AddOns:
————————————————
Blizzard has made the decision that the user interface of World of Warcraft is fully customizable, modifiable and extendable. This is completely legal, and is encouraged by Blizzard. A User Interface Modification (UI Mod for short) and AddOn is exactly the same thing, the difference is merely in their names. Usually Mods tend to refer to smaller things that only modify existing funcionality of the user interface, whereas AddOns tend to add extra functionality. From now-on I will collectively refer to anything that customizes the WoW UI as an AddOn.

AddOns are created using the Lua scripting language mentioned above, and XML technology. They are pretty powerful and can often do more than merely add fancy buttons and windows on your screen. I will not go into the gory details of how you create these, there are many excellent introductory guides around. Here is a link you will find useful if you are interested in more details:
http://www.wowwiki.com/Interface_Customization

From a user's point of view, what you need to know is that AddOns come in the form of one or more text files, ending in the ".xml" and ".lua" extensions. These files are supposed to go into a folder called Interface in your World of Warcraft folder, or into one of it's sub-folders. Usually AddOns are distributed as zip files by their authors, and you "install" them by simply unzipping them in your World of Warcraft folder. (If you don't see an Interface folder, don't worry. It is not there by default. If you want to put anything into it, you are free to create it yourself).

Warning: Be very very careful with AddOns that come as executable ".exe" files. Always triple-check before you use these to make sure that they really do what they say they do, as executable files can do anything whatsoever to your computer. AddOns are supposed to be written in text format in .xml and .lua files, so that anyone can check that there is nothing malicious about them. You have no such check available with executable files. Also, since AddOns only operate within WoW, they can't harm your computer, whereas executable files can.

Having said that, lot of authors distribute their AddOns as executable files. These executables most of the time don't do more than just unzip the AddOn's files and place them in your WoW folder in the appropriate places. Occasionally the executables are used to automatically download updated versions of the AddOn, or to upload data collected by the AddOn (for example item statistics to be put on a web-site etc.).

Installing: You usually install an AddOn by simply unzipping the file it came in into your World of Warcraft folder. Sometimes you have to copy the AddOn's files into its place manually. Each AddOn lives in its own folder, and you should end up with a folder structure like this for each AddOn:
World of WarfratInterfaceAddOns<addon name>

Uninstalling: You can always uninstall any AddOn by deleting the AddOn's folder. You can reset the WoW UI to its default state by deleting the World of WarcraftInterface folder.

Cosmos, CTMod, Gypsy, Nurfed and other AddOn packages:
———————————————————–
If you look around the forums a bit, you will see names like Cosmos, CTMod, Gypsy and Nurfed popping up. These are major AddOn packages that contain a large number of UI AddOns. Their authors (often working in teams) are respectable members of the WoW community who have worked hard to create useful (and sometimes not-so-useful) AddOns for your gaming pleasure, and have bundled them together into one easy-to-use package.

Feel free to use any and all of these packages. They are legal, Blizzard allows and encourages their use, although you won't get technical support from Blizzard if something is wrong with them. There are many of these around, download and try a few of them and see if you like them. Usually the authors make these packages highly configurable so that you can adjust them to your needs.

Note: a lot of these major AddOn packages conflict with each other, so you won't be able to use them together.

Standalone, pure AddOns, what's so good about them?
—————————————————————
You will often see AddOn authors being proud of their AddOn being "standalone", or "pure addon". In the past, often AddOns modified existing UI functionality by changing something in the existing, core UI files provided by Blizzard. This has lead to conflicts as different AddOns all tried to modify the same file. A "pure addon" is one that does not modify any existing files, and merely adds its own files. This is a very good thing, because you can have any number of such AddOns happily coexisting side-by-side.

Also, a lot of AddOns depend on other AddOns for their operation. For example, most AddOns in the Cosmos package wouldn't work by themselves, and need some of the core AddOns in the Cosmos package to be present to work. A "standalone" AddOn is one that is capable of working by itself, with nothing more than just that one AddOn being present. Again, this is a good thing, because it allows you to pick and choose just those exact AddOns that you want, without having anything you don't want.

Having said that, from the point of view of an AddOn's author, you will find that often a lot of AddOns do very similar sort of things. It is much more easy and quick for an AddOn author to create a new AddOn if they can rely on existing functionality in other AddOns or some common core "libraries". That's why there are AddOns out there that depend on things such as the "Sea" function library, which in itself is just a core AddOn. If you find an AddOn that requires some other core AddOn, don't be afraid of it. Just make sure you also download the core AddOn.

Think of this as how a lot of games nowadays depend on DirectX on the PC. Game authors can write their games much quicker knowing that the user's computer will provide them with the functionality they need in the form of DirectX. If you are happy about running games that require DirectX (such as WoW), you should also be happy about running AddOns that require other, common core addons.

Blizzard: WoW for PS3, 360 is a 'square peg, round hole thing' (WoW Leveling Guide)

's line of thought).

However, running parallel to Hideo Kojima's statement yesterday (about MGS4 being impossible for the Xbox 360 because the game wasn't designed for the 360 in the first place), J. Allen Brack and Tom Chilton of Blizzard both agree that WoW was always intended to be played on the PC.

In a recent interview with Videogamer, they both reiterated the fact that WoW won't be heading for consoles.

Brack says that WoW was "designed to have a keyboard and a mouse" and that the controls are really - to use Kojima's word from yesterday - optimized for a PC control scheme. Brack continues: "If you think about mapping those controls and all those different type of buttons that you have to a console without a keyboard for chatting, it's a very challenging proposition."

Chilton, likewise, explained that it's not a worthwhile endeavor to bring WoW to consoles;

It's really not that we have anything against consoles," Chilton said. "I mean we love console games also. And I'm sure there will be a successful MMO sometime on a console. So it has nothing to do with that. It's just more like a square peg round hole thing for our game. It just wasn't designed with that in mind.

But then… when Videogamer raised the point that Funcom will be bringing their Age of Conan to the Xbox 360 - and that they've got some technology to map the keyboard buttons to a 360 controller - Chilton simply replies that he thinks that WoW wouldn't be "a very good experience playing like that."

While the PS3 has the upcoming Wireless Keypad, and the 360 its Chatpad, they aren't all that big, y'know. As Brack said, it'll be a very challenging experience indeed.

Blizzard to show off Lich King opening cinematic at Leipzig Games Convention
Arthas approves of this message - Image 1Blizzard has already confirmed their presence at the Leipzig Games Convention, but Kotaku recently found out an extra bit of information pertaining to Blizzard's presence at GC. Specifically, Blizzard will be showing off some new media for convention-goers to drool over.

According to Kotaku's report, Blizzard is planning on unveiling the opening cinematic movie for Wrath of the Lich King at the event.

Following the airing of the opening movie, the company will also host a Q&A session, presumably to answer questions folks may have on the cinematic.

Playable demos, an opening cinematic, and a forum for questions. Sounds like the Blizzard media machine is going full force at Leipzig. Keep checking QJ for updates from Leipzig as it happens.

Get Past Battleground Fences Before It Starts (Warcraft Leveling)

A little fun with model editing.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

* 1. Launch MyWacraftStudio.

* 2. Open Patch.mpq.

* 3. Navigate to world/wmo/PVP/fence.

* 4. Extract these to your desktop.
The correct directory structure should be like this: world/wmo/PVP/fence . If you have to, you can create it yourself.

* 5. Open wmo.mpq . Find a small .wmo file and extract it to the same folder as above. Once you have extracted it, you need to rename it as follows:

Alliance fence - ArathiAllianceFence.wmo

Horde fence - ArathiHordeFence.wmo

The files with 000 in them, delete!

* 7. You should now have something like this: world/wmo/PVP/fence and 2 files in that directory. Now, just move the whole World directory to your World of Warcraft/data folder.

* 8. Log on and enjoy.
